Computer vision syndrome (Digital eye strain)

Computer vision syndrome (Digital eye strain), is a group of eye and vision related problem which are as follows

  • Itching

  • Tearing

  • Dryness

  • Redness

It results from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. In today’s work environment (both IT and Non-IT world) an average person is spending close to 8-9 hours looking at a computer screen. Apart from working hours, we add lot of screen time to our lives by mobile phone and TV use. Due to Digital eye strain, Your eyes may feel tired or uncomfortable. You may not be able to focus normally. This eye strain is very common in both children and adults. Who are at more risk to Computer vision Syndrome(CVS)? You may be at greater risk if you:

  • View your digital device at the wrong angle or wrong posture

  • Are too close to your digital device screen

  • Have eye problems (even minor ones) not corrected with glasses or contact lenses

  • Don’t take breaks while you are working

  • Work in dim lit room

As a result, the eye focusing and eye movement requirements for digital screen viewing can place additional demands on the visual system. Do I have CVS? The most common symptoms are:

  • Eyestrain.

  • Dry eyes.

  • Headaches.

  • Blurred vision.

  • Muscle spasm.

  • Neck, shoulder and back pain.

Treatment for Computer Vision Syndrome As such CVS is not a life threatening condition, but if left unchecked, can lead to severe eye problems. Before even starting any sort of treatment, it is always advised; if you are spending lot of time on digital screen do visit your eye doctor periodically. Treatment starts with creating a better work environment, With these simple practices, you can reduce the effects of computer vision syndrome:

  • Make sure the lighting in the room is comfortable on the eyes, and prevents you from staring into glare of the computer screen. If required use a screen glare filter.

  • 20-20-20 rule – Every 20 minutes, look at the distance 20 feet away from the computer or digital device for 20 seconds.

  • Position the digital display so that your head is in a naturally comfortable position .

  • Take breaks. A few minutes away from the computer can go a long way when it comes to your eyes. Think of it similarly to the way you take stretch breaks for your arms and back.

In case of existing eye care problems, your eye care provider will also need to treat any hidden health problems; for example in case of dry eyes:

  • lubricating eye drops need to be used.

  • Treating associated allergies is a must.

  • Taking a prescription medicine to increase tear production alleviates the problem of dryness in the eye.

  • Also it is necessary to stay hydrated and be in a humid environment.
