Eyestrain is also known as Asthenopia. Having eyestrain is very common and is not considered as a serious condition. It is more like a symptom than the disease itself. Eyestrain does not cause eye injury or any permanent damage. It is rather an annoying condition. Eye Anatomy Eye is a complex and vital organ of the body and is one of the five senses. Main components of the eye are Cornea, Iris, Pupil, Lens and Retina. Just like any other part of the body, eyes also have blood and nerve supply and is supported by group of eye muscles. Muscles of the eye Extra ocular muscles are located outside the eye and hold the eyeball within the orbit. They are responsible for eyeball and eyelid movement. They are

  • Lateral rectus

  • Inferior oblique

  • Superior oblique

How do my eyes get tired (Eyestrain)? Eyes are supported by muscles and like any other muscle of the body, after extended use, muscle fatigue leads to strained eyes. Focussing on task for longer periods can develop muscle tiredness. Symptoms

  • Dry eyes

  • Itching or burning in the eyes

  • Blurred vision

  • Poor concentration

  • Light sensitivity ( Photophobia )

Causes Main reason for eye strain is due to indulgence in activities like reading, writing, driving and focussing on smaller objects for long periods. Electronic equipments Long Screen hours are a major concern today as we are surrounded by gadgets all around us. Whether it is desktop work in the offices or using our smart phones. People who look at screens continuously for more than two hours are prone to have eyestrain. Sometimes underlying eye muscle imbalance worsens the condition. Continuous driving Driving long distances and continuous focus on the road, leads to tired eyes. Glare from the other cars headlamp makes driving stressful, as stressed eyes find it difficult to adjust to different lighting conditions. Posture Poor posture while watching television, low height adjustment of computer screen can make the eye muscle strained. How can I reduce Eyestrain

  • 20-20-20 rule – After every 20 minutes of continuous work, look away 20 feet for 20 seconds.

  • Reduce time spent on single activity.

  • Use right light – Adjust screen brightness according to the background as frequently changing light can cause eyestrain.

  • Maintain right posture and screen height to reduce eye, head and neck movement.

  • Use glare filter for screens and eyeglasses.

  • Blinking more often and using lubricating Eye drops can help in easing out any strain.

  • Use of sunglasses while going outdoors or working in an atmosphere where bright light is present helps to relieve eye strain.
