Lasik, Smile or Contoura vision: which one is good for me?

Using eyeglasses as corrective measure has come a long way to modern treatment modalities today, ranging from Lasik to Contoura vision. We tend to confuse, when we have multiple options. Lasik, Smile or Contoura vision, which one is good for me?

In this blog, we will try to highlight the evolutionary changes in corrective procedures. So that you can reach to a final conclusion of selecting the best option and getting rid of your eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Lasik laser eye surgery

Lasik stands for Laser- Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. In this procedure, two separate lasers are utilized, first a Femtosecond laser creates a hinged flap. This Flap is elevated and cornea underneath the flap is remodelled with an excimer laser. It’s a small day care procedure.

When light does not focus on your retina properly, your vision becomes blurry and leads to a condition called refractive error. The basic conditions where Lasik can treat the conditions are:

  • Nearsightedness (myopia) – It is a condition, in which you see things clearly when they’re close to you, but things become blurry when they move away.

  • Farsightedness (hyperopia) – In this condition, you tend to see faraway things more clearly, but they become blurry as they move closer.

  • Astigmatism – In this condition, everything looks blurry both nearby and distant objects. Corneal curvature and flatness plays a major role in eyesight.

  • Presbyopia – It is an age related condition in which the eye lens loses its ability to focus on nearby objects.

SMILE laser eye surgery

SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) is a laser vision correction surgery, similar to Lasik and known as Refractive Lenticule Extraction/RELEX. Smile surgery is used to treat mainly nearsightedness (myopia). In case of astigmatism, smile surgery can be used upto 5 Diopters. It is a bladeless treatment.

In the SMILE procedure, eye surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to create a small arc-shaped incision on the surface of the cornea. Then the same laser is used to remove the lenticule ( lens-shaped bit of tissue) from the cornea. Once the cornea is reshaped, vision gets corrected due to change in corneal curvature.

With the tiny lenticule removed, the shape of the cornea is altered, correcting nearsightedness. The corneal incision heals within a few days without stitches, and vision recovery is achieved.

It is a Femtolaser procedure, done quickly, ensures long-lasting and stable results. It offers the least possibility of dry eye as corneal nerves are well preserved. The chances of retreatment are very low, as it is a keyhole surgery.

Contoura Vision eye surgery

Contoura was introduced in the US in 2015. It has been approved by USFDA for vision correction. Contoura vision surgery is also known as Topography-guided LASIK surgery or Robotic Lasik. The surgery is performed under the effect of topical drop anaesthesia. In this advanced technology, an Aberrometer is used to capture 22000 data points of the corneas front surface and a customised corneal map is created through topography.

Every point is analyzed for abnormality and is corrected through LASER. Post-surgery eye care is an important part of the treatment to achieve the desired result. Eye drops including anti-inflammatory and antibiotics are prescribed for fast healing and recovery.

Some of the difference between Contoura vision surgery and LASIK and Smile are:

  • Better results: Patients experience corrections better than 6/6.

  • Broader scope: The scope of Contoura is not just limited to vision correction rather it can treat corneal curvature abnormalities or aberrations as well.

  • Advanced technology: Conventional LASIK surgery maps only 200 points on the cornea while the Contoura vision surgery maps 22000 points on cornea.

  • Fewer side effects: As damage to the tissue is relatively less and has quick healing time, Contoura vision surgery has fewer side effects.

Which one should I go for?

Though Contoura vision is the latest technology, yet it is not for everyone. A comprehensive eye examination is required to decide which treatment modality is best for you.

At our clinic we perform both Lasik and all other refractive surgeries. We also perform SMILE and Contoura vision procedures with maximum precision and greater comfort.
